What is blending?

Blending is combining individual sounds into a word: /c/ + /a/ + /t/ becomes "cat." It's the single skill that turns "knowing the alphabet" into "reading." Segmenting is the reverse — breaking a word back into its sounds, needed for spelling.

How to teach it, in order

  1. Start with 2 sounds: say /a/.../t/ slowly, then faster, until it sounds like "at."
  2. Add a third sound: /s/../a/../t/ → "sat." Keep the gap between sounds short — long pauses make blending harder, not easier.
  3. Let them do the blending out loud, not you — hearing themselves merge the sounds is what builds the skill.
  4. Move to new words with the same pattern before adding new sounds: sat → mat → hat → cat, then introduce a new ending sound.

Practice words, by difficulty

Easiest (continuous sounds — can be stretched): am, at, an, in, on

Next (one stop sound): cat, sat, hop, pig, dog

Harder (two stop sounds): cap, bat, dig, pot, tub
