What is a decodable story?

A decodable story is written using only the letter-sound patterns a child has already been taught — no words they'd have to guess from pictures or memory. That's what makes it readable by the child, not just readable to the child.

Why picture books work against early readers

A beautifully illustrated storybook is great for read-aloud time, but it actively works against a beginning reader: the words are unpredictable, so the child learns to guess from pictures and context instead of sounding words out. That habit is hard to unlearn once it sets in.

What makes a good decodable story

Example (short a, CVC only)

"The Cat and the Bat": A cat sat on a mat. A bat had a hat. The cat and the bat sat on the mat. "Can I nap?" said the cat. "Yes," said the bat.
