When a consonant shuts the vowel in, the vowel says its short sound. Cat, bed, sit, hot, cup.
A closed syllable has one vowel followed by at least one consonant, and the syllable ends there. The vowel is short.
The most frequent syllable type in English and the most reliable. In a stressed closed syllable the short value holds with very few exceptions — mainly the -ild, -ind, -old and -ost families. In an unstressed closed syllable the vowel reduces to schwa, which is a stress effect rather than an exception to the syllable type.
cat, bed, sit, hot, cup
hand, milk, stop, desk, jump, rabbit, napkin, picnic, sudden, basket, insect, fantastic
Made-up words that follow the rule. A child who reads these has the pattern rather than the vocabulary.
fim, lub, nast, vesk, plom
Name the syllable type explicitly once children are reading CVC words fluently. The label is not the point; the point is that the label makes open, VCe and r-controlled describable later. Children who have a word for 'closed' can be told 'this one is open instead', which is far more efficient than re-teaching the vowel from scratch.
