Where Wiggler teaches it: Skill 6: Magic e

Child explanation

Cap becomes cape. The e is quiet and the a says its name.

The rule

A, one consonant, then a silent e gives long a, /eɪ/.

What is really going on

The most consistent of the five VCe patterns. Exceptions are few and mostly involve a following r, which overrides the vowel (care, share), or the soft-c and soft-g words where the e has a second job as well as marking the vowel (face, race, cage, page — where both jobs happen at once).

Examples

Easy examples

cake, name, made, late, game

More examples

gate, date, tape, cane, lane, plane, shape, grape, brave, space, shade, trade, skate, flame

Pseudo-words

Made-up words that follow the rule. A child who reads these has the pattern rather than the vocabulary.

blape, frade, shate, glape

Exceptions

Contrast pairs

Decodable sentences

Teacher note

Teach this one first and to mastery. It has the cleanest contrast pairs in English — cap/cape, mad/made, tap/tape, plan/plane — and a child who internalises the scan-to-the-end habit here carries it to the other four patterns almost for free.
