Meaning suffixes: -ful, -less, -ness, -ment

Chunks of meaning on the end of a word. Unlike -ed and -ing, they leave the root almost untouched, which makes them the easiest suffixes to read.

Child explanation

Helpful is help plus ful. Careless is care plus less. Cover the end and read the word inside.

The rule

-ful, -less, -ness, -ment and -able are unstressed chunks added to a whole word. The root is visible and unchanged, so a reader can cover the suffix and read what is left.

What is really going on

These suffixes attach to free-standing roots and leave them intact, which makes them structurally easier than -ed, -ing and -er, where doubling and e-dropping change the root. All are unstressed, so the vowels reduce — -ful is /fəl/, not /fʊl/. Note the single l: helpful, not helpfull.

Teacher note

The cover-and-read routine is the point. Once a child can do it for -ful and -less, they can do it for anything, and long words stop being a category of their own. Pair opposites — hopeful and hopeless, careful and careless — because the meaning contrast makes the structure obvious.
