Some words came into English from Greek, and they all look a bit alike: ph, a y in the middle, ch saying /k/. Photograph, gym and school are all Greek.
Greek-derived English words carry a recognisable set of spellings: ph for /f/, ch for /k/, y for a vowel, rh for /r/, and silent p in ps, pn and pt. Recognising one is a strong clue that the others may appear.
These are transliteration conventions rather than English spelling rules: ph for phi, ch for chi, y for upsilon, rh for rho with rough breathing. Because Greek vocabulary entered English mainly through science, medicine and scholarship, these spellings cluster in academic registers — which makes the pattern useful well beyond decoding, as a vocabulary cue.
photo, school, gym, rhyme
graph, phone, physics, chorus, chemist, echo, stomach, myth, system, symbol, rhythm, psalm
philosophy, psychology, chronology, hypothesis, synonym, mnemonic, chlorophyll
This is one of the highest-leverage things an older reader can learn, because it converts a set of unrelated exceptions into one coherent group with a reason. It also pays off in vocabulary: a child who knows photo means light and graph means writing can work out photograph, telegraph, biography and photosynthesis without being taught any of them.
