ER, IR and UR

Three spellings, one sound. For reading this is easy; for spelling it is the hardest thing in English, and the difference should be said out loud.

Where Wiggler teaches it: Skill 8: R-Controlled Vowels

Child explanation

Her, bird and turn all have the same sound in the middle, spelled three different ways. When you are reading, all three say the same thing.

The rule

Er, ir and ur all represent the same sound, /ɜːr/. For a reader that makes them easy. For a speller there is no rule to choose between them, and the word must be known.

What is really going on

Three Middle English vowels merged before r, leaving one phoneme with three inherited spellings and no conditioning environment. ear and or-after-w join the same set, giving five spellings for one sound. This is the clearest case in English where reading and spelling difficulty diverge completely, and it is a strong argument for the Rule Bank flagging each rule's reading usefulness separately from its spelling usefulness.

Decodable sentences

Do not teach it like this

Teaching er, ir and ur as three different sounds a child must learn to distinguish.

They are one sound. Asking a child to hear a difference that does not exist in their accent produces failure at a task that had no answer.

"These three all say the same thing when you read them. When you write, you have to remember which one the word uses."

Teacher note

Say plainly that this is easy for reading and hard for spelling. Children find that honest framing reassuring, and it stops them thinking they are missing something. For spelling, word families are the only real tool: -ird, -urn, -irt, -urse. Note that er is by far the most common of the three, so it is the best default guess when writing an unknown word.
