Where Wiggler teaches it: Skill 4: Consonant Blends

Child explanation

Sssstop. You can hold the /s/ as long as you like, then say the next sound.

The rule

In an s blend both letters keep their usual sound. Because /s/ can be held, these are the easiest blends to segment.

What is really going on

S blends are usually introduced first among the clusters because /s/ is a continuant and can be prolonged, making the two-sound structure audible. They also occur word-finally (-st, -sk, -sp), which the other families mostly do not.

Position in the word

Examples

Easy examples

stop, spin, swim, snap, skip

More examples

star, step, still, small, smell, snow, speak, spot, sport, scar, school, sweet, swing, fast, desk, must

Pseudo-words

Made-up words that follow the rule. A child who reads these has the pattern rather than the vocabulary.

stib, spam, snud, skep, swom

Contrast pairs

Teacher note

Start the blend work here. Holding the /s/ makes the structure obvious in a way that /b/ in black never can, and children who succeed on s blends approach the others expecting to succeed. Note that three-letter blends — scr, spl, spr, str — are all s blends with one more sound.
