Where Wiggler teaches it: Skill 13: Suffixes
Tion says /shun/. It is one chunk — do not try to read the t, i, o and n one at a time.
The ending -tion is pronounced /ʃən/ and is read as a single chunk. It is always unstressed, and the syllable before it always carries the stress.
The ti in -tion is a single grapheme for /ʃ/, produced by palatalisation of Latin -tio before a following vowel. Because the suffix is always unstressed and always pulls stress onto the preceding syllable, recognising it also tells a reader where to put the emphasis — which is unusual and useful.
nation, station, action, motion, fiction
question, section, mention, attention, direction, invention, collection, education, information, celebration
Made-up words that follow the rule. A child who reads these has the pattern rather than the vocabulary.
blation, shuption, frantion
Teach -tion as one visual chunk from the moment it appears, and have children cover it and read the root: na-, sta-, ac-. That two-step approach makes information and celebration readable years earlier than letter-by-letter decoding would.
