Child explanation

Rain, boat and need each have two letters making one vowel sound. Keep them together.

The rule

A vowel team syllable has two or more letters representing one vowel sound. When dividing a word, keep the vowel team whole.

What is really going on

The practical importance of naming this type is in syllable division: a child who splits rai-nbow or bo-at has broken the grapheme and cannot recover. The instruction to keep a vowel team whole is what prevents it.

rain, boat, need, cloud, play

More examples

train, coach, green, sweet, found, rainbow, season, between, explain, toaster

Pseudo-words

Made-up words that follow the rule. A child who reads these has the pattern rather than the vocabulary.

blain, shoat, freen

Teacher note

Teach the division rule at the same time as the teams themselves. The instruction 'find the vowel team first, then split' is the single most useful habit for longer words, and it pre-empts the commonest multisyllable error.
