Where Wiggler teaches it: Skill 11: Advanced Patterns & Silent Letters

Child explanation

Gnat and sign both have a quiet g sitting next to the n.

The rule

G is silent when it sits directly beside n at the start or end of a word or syllable: gnat, gnome, sign, design, foreign.

What is really going on

Initial gn simplified in early modern English, in parallel with kn and wr. Final gn is mostly Latin and French, and like -mb the g returns when a suffix gives it a following vowel: sign becomes signal, design becomes designate.

Teacher note

The sign/signal pair is one of the most useful things to show an older reader: it demonstrates that silent letters carry meaning even when they carry no sound, which is the beginning of morphological reading. Group with kn and wr for the initial cases.
