Where Wiggler teaches it: Skill 11: Advanced Patterns & Silent Letters
Lamb, thumb and climb all end with a quiet b. You can see it but you do not say it.
At the end of a word or syllable, b after m is silent. The much smaller bt group — debt, doubt, subtle — has a silent b before t.
Word-final /mb/ simplified to /m/ in Middle English. The b returns when a suffix adds a syllable that gives it a vowel to lean on — bombard from bomb, crumble from crumb — which is a useful thing to show older children. The bt group is different in kind: those b's were inserted by Renaissance scholars to show a Latin root, and were never pronounced in English at all.
The b in lamb was once said. The b in debt never was — it was added in the sixteenth century to make the word look more like Latin debitum.
lamb, thumb, climb, comb, crumb
numb, limb, bomb, tomb, womb, dumb, plumber, climbing
debt, doubt, subtle, doubtful
Teach -mb as an end-of-word family and contrast it with number and remember so the boundary is clear. The crumb/crumble pair is worth showing to older children — it demonstrates that the letter is not decoration, it is waiting for a vowel.
