The -ous, -ious and -eous endings

All reduce to /əs/ — famous, serious, gorgeous. The ou is schwa, which is why it looks nothing like the ou of cloud.

Where Wiggler teaches it: Skill 13: Suffixes

Child explanation

Ous says /us/, quietly. Famous, dangerous, nervous — the ending is never the loud part.

The rule

The ending -ous is /əs/. With an i or e before it, an extra reduced syllable appears: -ious and -eous are /iəs/.

What is really going on

An adjective-forming suffix from Latin, always unstressed. The ou here is schwa, which is worth naming explicitly: children who have learned ou as /aʊ/ will otherwise try to read famous as /feɪmaʊs/.

Teacher note

Name the schwa explicitly when teaching this. It is the clearest case of an ending whose spelling makes no sense until a child knows that unstressed vowels reduce.
